Fire and Smoke Alarm Systems in South Africa
Smoke and fire alarm systems use advanced detection devices to detect any combustion -- flaming and/or glowing and/or emission of smoke. Alarm systems are purposely designed to raise a response -- a "call-to-action". The problem is that it often takes some time before the cause of the "alarm" has been inspected and dealt with by a human. A standard automated response to a system detecting smoke or flames has been to turn on a sprinkler system -- you have undoubtedly seen this in the movies? What a mess; but, in all fairness, sprinkler systems have saved many lives and buildings.
High tech office machines, fittings, furniture and computers, laced with flame-retardants, will often smoulder and not burst into flame. It is a very costly exercise to recover computer data and refurbish an entire office that is waterlogged all because of a smouldering cable! Smoke and fire detection and suppression has therefore needed to evolve to new levels of sophistication.
The advent of very early warning smoke detection devices that are active rather than passive has made smoke detection an art of its own. This technology allows for preventative "fire fighting" by detecting
A natural progression from the "trusted" sprinkler system is found in many newer building -- here smoke and fire alarm systems are often integrated with an automatic gas based fire suppression system which suppresses or extinguishes the fire before it spreads.
